  • Sign-Up Form: STEM Journalism - Speaker event & Workshop: Dr Sunny Bains is a scientist, journalist, editor, podcaster, and expert in technical communication. For more than three decades, she has worked as a journalist for magazines including The Economist, Science, Nature Electronics, New Scientist, and Wired. In her workshop, Dr Bains will discuss the pros/cons of being a STEM journalist and how to think about selling your own stories to real publications. Do come along with some of your own writing to get feedback and discuss your ideas with an expert in science communication!

Dr Sunny Bains is a scientist, journalist, editor, podcaster, and expert in technical communication. For more than three decades, she has worked as a journalist for magazines including The Economist, Science, Nature Electronics, New Scientist, and Wired. She also founded and edited many specialist publications, including Holographics International Magazine in the late 80s, Optical Computing, Robotics and Machine Perception, Nanotechnology, and SPIE Newsroom while working with SPIE (The International Society for Optics and Photonics) in the 1990s and early 2000s. Through her company Form & Content Media, she has helped create projects like The Neuromorphic Engineer, The Briefing, and ENGins (Engineering Inspiration). Her technical focus is neuromorphic engineering: the design of electronics based on structures in the brain. In her workshop, Dr Bains will discuss the pros/cons of being being a STEM journalist and how to think about selling your own stories to real publications. An independently founded non-profit publication launched in June 2022, UCL Science Magazine is UCL's newfound home of thought-provoking scientific journalism designed for, and written by students. Having recently affiliated with the UCL student union, we aim to make science and technology enjoyable - to inspire the next generation of scientists and technologists.
